A. Multiple Choice Questions:

1. Biotic factors include all the Living things.

  • Non-Living things
  • Living things
  • Both Living and non-living things
  • Natural resources

2. Examples of abiotic factors are All the waterbodies.

  • All the waterbodies
  • All the landforms
  • water, soil, air, light
  • All the human-made things

3. Human environment refers to the The surroundings made by humans and All the social institutions and organisations.

  • The natural surroundings of humans
  • The surroundings made by humans
  • All the social institutions and organisations
  • Both b and c

4. An ecosystem is any community of living and non-living things that Are independent of each other.

  • Work together
  • Interact with each other
  • Are independent of each other
  • All of these

5. All natural resources need to be conserved because They will soon get exhausted.

  • They will soon decay
  • They will soon get exhausted
  • They are very costly
  • None of these

B. Fill in the Blanks:

1. An Ecosystem is a community of living and non-living components which are independent on each other.

2. In an ecosystem, the Biotic components include all the living organisms of the ecosystem.

3. Human-made environment includes human activities and their interaction with the Abiotic components.

4. Living organisms which depend directly or indirectly on autotrophs for their food are called Heterotrophs.

5. Air is made up of several gases but the two most important gases for living beings are Oxygen and Carbon dioxide.

D. Answer in One or Two Sentences:

What do you understand by overexploitation of natural resources?

Overexploitation refers to the overuse of natural resources to such an extent that it almost reaches a stage of exhaustion.

When is ‘Earth Day’ Celebrated?

Earth Day is celebrated worldwide every year on April 22 to support environmental protection.

What are greenhouse gases?

Greenhouse gases are carbon dioxide, methane, nitrogen, nitrous oxide, and CFCs.

What is the full form of three Rs?

The full form of three Rs are Reduce, Recycle, and Reuse.

What do you mean by conservation of environment?

Conservation of environment means the proper use and management of natural resources. It includes water, air, land, earth deposits, wildlife, and natural vegetation.

E. Answer the Following Questions:

Explain the composition of biotic and abiotic factors in the environment. Give suitable examples to distinguish between the two factors.

Biotic Components: These components consist of all the living organisms within an ecosystem, for example, plants, animals, birds, insects, fungi, and other living organisms.
Abiotic Components: These components comprise all the non-living things in an ecosystem, for example, water, air, soil, sunlight, and minerals.

‘Each ecosystem is unique, but all ecosystems consist of three primary components’. Comment.

Each ecosystem is unique, but all ecosystems consist of three primary components:
Autotrophs: They are the producers of energy. Plants make up the majority of the autotrophs in an ecosystem as they convert energy from the Sun or other sources into food.
Heterotrophs: They are the consumers of energy. These are organisms which depend directly or indirectly upon the autotrophs for their food. They are also known as consumers. Most of the heterotrophs are animals.
Non-living matter: It is soil, sediments, leaf litter, and other organic matter found on the ground or at the bottom of an aquatic system.

Can development and conservation of environment go hand-in-hand? Explain your point of view.

Yes, development and conservation of environment can go hand-in-hand.
•Waste water generated by industries should be
recycled.
• Forest resources should be. used in an environment friendly and developmentally sound manner. Instead of using non-renewable natural resources, use of renewable natural resources should be preferred.
• We should use natural resources cautiously so that economic growth and ecological conservation go hand in hand.

What are some of the factors that cause imbalance in an ecosystem?

Factors that cause imbalance in an ecosystem are Overexploitation of natural resources, Habitat destruction, Environmental pollution, Greenhouse gas emission, Nuclear weapons, Radioactive wastes, and Biotechnological misuse.

Protection of the environment has become an important issue today. Suppose you start a new venture as an entrepreneur, how will you contribute towards protecting the environment?

I will contribute in Environment protection as an Entrepreneur in following ways:
• I will start a rainwater harvesting venture to help people save, collect, and store water and will also add a feature of purifying rainwater.
• I will use three Rs – Reduce, Recycle, and Reuse in my venture to contribute to the conservation of natural resources.
• Contributing with saving electricity by renewable energy, using solar power to generate electricity, saving water, Recycling Stocks, etc.
• Using Eco-friendly things in my venture, Using LED and CFL bulbs instead of incandescent bulbs.
• Using alternative fuels like CNG (Compressed Natural Gas) in vehicles, instead of petrol and diesel.
• Using biogas and biofuels.

F. Application Based Questions:

Renu lives in a society where the residents are facing an acute water crisis. Suggest some ways to the residents to conserve water.

• Rainwater Harvesting
• Making proper Drainage system
• Protecting trees for good rain
• Try a Navy Shower or, even better, a bucket bath.
• Water Efficient Plumbing Fixtures (Fix any leaks)
• Recycle and reuse water

Swati uses wood and cow-dung cakes as fuel in her kitchen. She is not aware that these fuels pollute the environment. Suggest some alternative eco-friendly fuels to her to avoid air pollution.

• She can use biogas made from cow dung itself because it is Eco-friendly.
• Use Kerosene, Natural gas (Methane) and LPG instead of wood and cow-dung.
